There is one word in the blogging industry that nobody gets tired of and that is “Traffic.” One of the main reasons a lot of blogs come to a early end is because they don’t receive enough traffic. Who’s fault is it that they don’t receive enough interaction though? “Yes, you guessed it. Their own fault.” Gaining traffic in the early stages of your blog is quite a handful, you have to promote and interact with people to get your blog noticed. Remember that popular blogs didn’t just spring up over night generating thousands and thousands of visitors each day, hours and hours of hard work finally paid off for them.

New bloggers usually face the problem of getting traffic allocated towards their site and they don’t know what they are doing wrong. One mistake that I know a lot of people adhere to is that of having a site on the internet makes it seen by millions of people. That isn’t the case at all, your site will most probably not be seen by more than a 100 people in the next 2 months if you don’t do any kind of promotion or advertising. That’s why most of the times people choose hosting that doesn’t perform like it should, they should get inexpensive web hosting solutions that will live up to the sites needs. That said I have listed a couple of tips below on how to generate traffic towards your site and get the ball rolling. What are we waiting for, let’s rock n’ roll.

Write Unique Content

I know you hear this a lot but, unique content is key.If people love reading articles that they need, why not provide them with information that is useful and needed. There are article sites out their that let you use their content but, how does your personality or character reflect through content that have been written by other people? The only way to really gain readers and subject your content to a bigger audience is by writing unique articles by yourself. Inspiration can be gained through other writers content or by doing a follow up on a certain topic that you read on another blog but, the main point still stands out above the others and that is “Unique Content is Key

Don’t Get Too Personal

The title describes exactly what you have to do in this case. No one really cares about your dog that died or your car that broke down. Write articles for your niche’ help people in the industry, motivate them in ways that others wouldn’t. If you were to write about your personal life everyday, unless your Paris Hilton or Brad Pitt you won’t get any attention from the readers out their. Keep your content clean.

Social Networking

I do advise every blogger out their to take part in social interaction with people in the same niche as themselves. This doesn’t only spread your content it builds valuable relationships between different people. Social networking has taken the world by storm, including services such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Wave, Myspace etc not only have they changed the way people interact they have set the pace for the future. Interacting with so many different people at once was only a vision a few years ago but, with the ever upgrading technology people have made it more than possible in so many different ways. If you want to drive some more traffic towards your blog I definitely recommend taking part in social media.

Write Informative Articles

What I’m trying to say is that you should write articles that are useful and straight to the point. There is no need to bore people with long articles that beat around the bush several times before actually reaching its final impacting point. Why not just make your statement early instead of running in circles? If someone would to give you two options on how to reach the train station, would you take the long way or the shortcut? That’s what I thought, everyone would go the short way. The same counts for Articles and posts, Why read a long descriptive post stating boring facts where you can read about the exact same topic in a much shorter dynamic version. Keep it short and to the point, that’s the way to go.

Comment on Other Blogs

Writing useful comments on other blogs will help you much more than you actually think. If you were to deliver a useful comment on a certain topic on a different blog in your niche the readers would of course want to see what the writer has to offer on his own site/blog. This not only creates interaction opportunities it creates links towards you on different blogs. If the blog is well ranked it will be picked up by Google pretty fast as well. You will only benefit from leaving comments on other blogs.

Post Articles Regularly

Posting articles regularly will generate more traffic than you think. I know a lot of people don’t have the time to post more than once or twice a week but, if it was at all possible your blog will reap a lot more if you were to post at least 4-5 times a week. This also provides the readers with quality content to feast their eyes on each day. It also gives them a good reason to come back to your blog and to subscribe to your feed. Do you subscribe to blogs that only post 1 article each week? Is it worth reading? Posting regularly also shows people that you are committed towards what you do and that you go out of your way to provide your readers with quality content.

Trackback and Link to Other Blogs

A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger’s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leaves a shortened summary of your blog post on their blog entry – it’s sort of like your blog telling someone else’s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments. This is a great method to use especially because it will catch the main bloggers attention as well as his readers of the certain article. Trackbacks appear as comments on mostly all blogs, except those that have the comments and trackbacks separated. Users will scroll down the page over the comments and will then be able to see the excerpt from your blog post linking to the post they are currently reading. This will definitely win you a few visitors.

Run Contests For Your Readers

Rewarding your readers is always a way to make them come back. Running contests and giveaways are definitely the best way to accomplish the interaction between your readers and you rewarding them for being loyal to the blog. There are so many different ways that you could setup a contest or giveaway and attract more readers to your blog. Using different setups you can easily get more readers to your RSS FEED or you could gain some more twitter followers, it depends on what you’re aiming for in the end.

Promote Your Blog

Promoting your blog is definitely one of the key roles in establishing a good following. If you do not promote your blog from the get go, you are going to get pretty frustrated with the lack of readers and traffic. Posting articles and useful resources and having no reaction from your visitors can become a really frustrating business. Especially because you dedicate countless hours to writing articles and researching different topics to provide them with the best articles that you could possibly come up with. Promoting your blog could be done in various ways but, the most popular ways to do this is definitely by word of mouth, inviting friends and family, speaking about the blog a lot, sharing ideas with others, bookmarking the site on social sites, sharing the articles via twitter, facebook, designbump, digg, designmoo, designfloat, stumbleupon, delicious etc. There are quite a lot of ways you can promote your blog. My bit of advice would be to follow Nike’s Advice – Just Do IT.

Write Articles For Other Blogs

Writing for another blog could seem like a time consuming thing especially if you have your blog to attend to each day. Writing for other blogs will generate quite a lot of traffic though, especially if its a fairly popular blog and you wrote a killer post. The amount of readers and visitors that pass through top end sites are unbelievable and having your content listed in between you will surely have a few visits from the different sites you have written for.

Social Media Buttons

Social Media Buttons could play a huge factor in you having a 1000 visitors a day or only a 100. Having social media sharing icons underneath or on top of your posts make is so much easier to share the interesting article with the rest of the world. The average person is pretty lazy infact, he/she is so lazy that they wouldn’t copy and paste the url to the post and tweet it even though they wish to share it with all their followers.  If there was a twitter button or re-tweet button they wouldn’t hesitate using it for one moment. It’s funny how people would change their methods when something becomes easier. I advise to definitely add Social Media Icons on your blog posts.

Announce Breaking News

When I say Announce Breaking News, I don’t mean become the next CNN. I mean announce news in your niche, newly redesigned site or a launch or a certain product or service. Try be the first to capture the limelight of the news at hand and then share it with your followers and friends. This could define you a great deal with having you display prominence and sophistication in the industry. Readers love reading up to date blogs and article, why not be the one to provide them with it.

Submit Your Article Links on Top Sites

There are a lot of sites nowadays that accept users to submit news to their news rolls. This gives the users the opportunity to submit a link to a article on the sites news board for all the readers and visitors to see. This makes it possible for users to also benefit from reading the site. This is also a good example of rewarding your readers by setting up a news submission system for them to post links to.

Sites to Submit News to: SmashingmagazineAbduzeedoPsdtutsDesignrfixCypherbox – There are thousands more.

Hope you enjoyed this article and that you will be here the next time I post a new one.

  18. I don’t think you should avoid personal altogether. There is definitely room for a personal angle, and there’s nothing wrong with mentioning your dog that died or your cat that broke down when it serves to illustrate a point. It’s just a matter of focus and writing style :)

In addition to “Posting Articles Regularly”, I would suggest scheduling your blog postings a few weeks to a month out. Using something like Google Calendar (which is what I’m using since I can hit it up from anywhere) to schedule your blog posts in advance makes it easier to stick to your posting schedule and avoid writer’s block.
