I usually don’t like mixtape covers because of their obvious bouts with copyright infringing photos, but..that cassette tape one is so sick and original!

Eeek – most of these are pretty horrible and as a lover of hip-hop and mixtapes, I see these atrocious designs all of the time. However there are about 4 to 5 that stand out from the cluttered mess of the others including the one mentioned about using the cassette tape.

Nice post but I find mixtape covers to be pathetically redundant and uncreative. The content and elements are always the same, guns, designer labels, wads of cash, chains, cars, excessive wealth, blah, blah blah. The crazy colors, heavy collage compositing and rich grungy contrast don’t compensate for the lack of imagination and cookie cutter plugin usage. I agree with theComplex and Melody that some are very well done like the cassette tape design. But for the most part they are interesting not exceptional. I would like to see one with dance music also.

Excellent showcase! The artwork on some of these covers is incredible. I hope a lot of the younger heads are taking note of yet another potential career for hip-hop entrepreneurs–graphic design.
